The Lighthouse of Alexandria: wonder of the ancient world
The Lighthouse of Alexandria, also known as the Pharos of Alexandria, was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and a symbol of Hellenistic greatness. Built on the island of Pharos, facing the city of Alexandria in Egypt, it was completed in the 3rd century BC during the reign of Ptolemy II. Its main purpose was to guide sailors safely into the harbor, but over time it became an emblem of power, knowledge, and progress.
Ancient sources describe the lighthouse as a monumental structure of three tiers: a square base, an octagonal middle section, and a cylindrical tower crowned by a statue, probably of Zeus or Poseidon. Estimates suggest it stood between 110 and 130 meters tall, making it one of the tallest buildings of antiquity. At its summit, a permanent fire burned, reflected by polished metal mirrors that could be seen from dozens of kilometers away.
Beyond its practical function as a maritime guide, the lighthouse embodied the spirit of Alexandria as the cultural capital of the Hellenistic world. The city was home to the legendary Library and served as a hub of science, philosophy, and commerce. The lighthouse, with its towering presence, represented the fusion of knowledge, engineering, and grandeur.
For centuries, it withstood earthquakes and the passage of time until it was finally destroyed between the 14th and 15th centuries. Today, its remains lie beneath the sea, yet its memory endures as an eternal symbol of human ingenuity and the achievements of ancient engineers who pushed the limits of their era.
With our model kit of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, you can relive in miniature the magnificence of one of the Seven Wonders of the World. A unique piece for collectors and history lovers who wish to preserve the legacy of this legendary monument.
