Discover the History That Shaped the Castle of Almansa
Perched on the steep Cerro del Águila, the imposing Castle of Almansa dominates the Almansa plain with a majestic silhouette that seems to merge with the rock. Considered one of the most representative castles of Castilla-La Mancha, this architectural jewel is now a perfect inspiration for any lover of historical modeling.
Its history dates back to the Almohad period, and remnants of its original construction using tapial (rammed earth), a typical technique of the time, are still preserved today. Over the centuries, the fortress underwent renovations and transformations, one of the most significant being carried out in the 15th century by Juan Pacheco, the second Marquis of Villena. Under his command, the iconic keep, the defensive barbicans, and the first embrasures for firearms were built.
Although it suffered the abandonment that affected many fortresses from the 16th century onward, in 1952 the castle was revived thanks to a major restoration that restored part of its original splendor.
The castle is arranged in two staggered enclosures, protected by semi-circular towers and crenellated walls. From the main courtyard, a steep staircase leads to the second enclosure, where the majestic keep rises. This square structure combines masonry and ashlar stonework, and inside you can admire a Gothic ribbed vault with stone ribs. At the top, a crenellated terrace offers unmatched views, accessible via a spiral staircase carved into the rock.
