BODIAM CASTLE

Bodiam Castle: The Story of a Fortress with the Soul of a Palace

Bodiam Castle, with its majestic towers mirrored in a wide moat surrounded by greenery, is one of the most picturesque castles in England. Located in the heart of East Sussex, it was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dallingrigge, a former knight of Edward III. Officially, it was erected by order of King Richard II to protect the region from a potential French invasion during the Hundred Years' War. However, more recent research suggests that the castle was built more for show than for genuine defense—a symbol of power and prestige rather than an impenetrable fortress. One clue lies in its relatively thin walls, just a few feet thick.

The castle has a rectangular layout, with round towers at each corner and square towers defending the center of each side. The main living quarters were located in one of the corner towers, while the chapel occupied another. The expansive moat, fed by natural springs from the north and south, adds a fairytale atmosphere to its silhouette, although it also served as a natural line of defense.

Although constructed during a time of conflict—England and France had been at war since 1337—Bodiam Castle never came under siege. The threat of a French invasion along the southern coast was real, and the castle was positioned to protect the upper reaches of a navigable river. Still, its design reflects a shift in priorities: beyond its imposing appearance, many of its features were intended to enhance comfort and reflect noble life rather than provide military strength, making it a clear example of late medieval castle architecture.

Over the centuries, Bodiam passed through the hands of powerful Sussex families, including the Lewknors and the Levetts—whose name still lives on in the road that runs in front of the castle. In the 17th century, it fell into ruin and was partially looted by local builders who reused its stones. It wasn't until the 20th century that the castle was brought back to life, thanks to Lord Curzon, who restored it and, in 1926, donated it to the National Trust, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

And for those who’d like to bring a piece of this history home, we offer a detailed Bodiam Castle model made from small ceramic bricks, available on our website. A unique creation that captures the charm of this medieval gem and invites you to rebuild it—brick by brick.
