BURG GRENCHEN

Burg Grenchen: History and Architecture

Burg Grenchen, also known as Bettleschloss, is an ancient fortification located in the Jura hills above the present-day towns of Grenchen and Bettlach, in the canton of Solothurn, Switzerland. Its initial construction dates back to around the year 1000, when it was built as a wooden fortress with palisades, forming part of a chain of castles in the region. Around 1150, it was rebuilt in stone by the Barons of Grenchen, incorporating a residential keep and several auxiliary buildings. By the year 1200, the structures were expanded, and an oven was added, indicating active daily life within the castle.

The fortress remained inhabited until the early 14th century. In 1583, the Council of Solothurn authorized the use of the ruins as a quarry for the construction of a prison tower in Grenchen, which accelerated its deterioration. In 1930, a 14th-century treasure was discovered in the castle area, consisting of 300 silver blanks (pre-minted coins), some minted coins, a small silver bar, and an iron bar. Between 1959 and 1961, the Grenchen Museum Society conducted archaeological investigations at the site. Following the excavations, the ruins were restored and preserved. Since then, the findings and a scale model of the castle have been on display at the Grenchen Museum of Cultural and Historical Heritage.

Today, the ruins of Burg Grenchen are accessible to hikers via a trail that begins near Bettlach, offering a tangible glimpse into the region’s medieval history.
For enthusiasts of medieval history and architecture, the Burg Grenchen model by Aedes Ars provides a detailed reproduction of this iconic structure.
