Crupet Castle: History and Architecture
Crupet Castle, also known as the Castle of the Carondelet family, is a picturesque medieval fortress located in the village of Crupet, in the Walloon region of Belgium. Originally built in the 13th century, the castle was designed as a fortified tower surrounded by a moat, serving both defensive and symbolic purposes. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and transformed, especially during the 17th and 18th centuries, when residential elements were added, giving it a more stately character.
From an architectural perspective, Crupet Castle combines typical features of medieval military architecture with later decorative details from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Its main tower, square in shape and topped with a conical roof, stands on an artificial island surrounded by water, connected to the rest of the property by a stone bridge. The castle’s surroundings, with gardens and rural landscapes, enhance its romantic and picturesque appearance.
Today, Crupet Castle is privately owned, but its silhouette and setting continue to attract lovers of history, architecture, and medieval art.
