The Basilica of Santa María de Eunate: History, Art, and Mystery on the Camino de Santiago
Located in a solitary and naturally beautiful setting near the town of Muruzábal, in the Chartered Community of Navarre, the Basilica of Santa María de Eunate is one of the most unique and enigmatic monuments along the Camino de Santiago. Its name, Eunate, comes from the Basque language and means “a hundred doors,” referring to its distinctive surrounding arcade.
Built in the late 12th century, this Romanesque church stands out both for its exceptional architecture and the mystery that surrounds it. Although there is no definitive documentation regarding its origins, tradition attributes its construction either to the Knights Templar or to the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, both of which were associated with protecting and assisting pilgrims. Its primary function is believed to have been as a hospital or hostel for pilgrims, as well as a place of prayer, located along a demanding stretch of the French Way to Santiago de Compostela.
The church features an octagonal floor plan, a highly unusual design in Iberian Romanesque architecture, which has given rise to many symbolic and even esoteric interpretations. On its eastern side, an elegant pentagonal apse houses the chapel. The entire structure is surrounded by an open-air cloister of pointed arches, forming a gallery of great beauty and uniqueness that creates an atmosphere of serenity and harmony with its natural surroundings.
Constructed from finely dressed ashlar stone, Eunate displays a sober yet meaningful sculptural decoration: capitals adorned with vegetal motifs, geometric patterns, and human figures—some possibly bearing initiatic symbolism. The building’s orientation, geometry, and isolation have inspired theories connecting it to astronomical knowledge and liturgical practices of medieval initiatic orders.
Today, the Basilica of Eunate remains a site of pilgrimage, contemplation, and scholarly interest, blending Romanesque art with a deep aura of spirituality. Its seamless integration into the landscape and enduring sense of mystery make it one of the most evocative heritage landmarks in Navarre and along the Camino de Santiago.
