Peñafiel Castle: The Story of a Legendary Fortress
Peñafiel Castle, located in the province of Valladolid, is one of the most iconic fortresses in Castile and León. Perched on a narrow ridge overlooking the Duero River valley, its elongated silhouette resembles a stranded ship, making it a unique monument both in terms of architecture and historical significance.
Its origins date back to the 10th century, when it was built as a defensive stronghold against Muslim incursions. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and reinforced, especially during the 14th and 15th centuries under the patronage of Don Juan Manuel and later the Infantes of Aragon. These renovations gave it its current appearance: an imposing structure measuring 210 meters long and only 33 meters wide, with high crenellated walls and a central keep rising 30 meters, from which much of the surrounding region can be seen.
For centuries, Peñafiel Castle was the scene of noble conflicts, a royal refuge, and a symbol of feudal power. Today, it has been restored and well preserved, and it houses the Provincial Wine Museum, allowing visitors to enjoy not only the military history of the fortress but also the rich wine-making heritage of the region.
