Sant Climent de Taüll: A Romanesque Gem in the Heart of the Pyrenees

In the picturesque village of Taüll, nestled in the Boí Valley (Lleida, Spain), stands one of the finest examples of European Romanesque art: the church of Sant Climent de Taüll. Consecrated in 1123 and built over the remains of an earlier church, Sant Climent is known for its elegant, austere interior and refined exterior decoration, characteristic of Lombard Romanesque style: blind arches, vertical pilaster strips (lesenes), and a sawtooth frieze running along its apses. But the most iconic feature is undoubtedly its slender six-story bell tower, with Lombard-arched windows that rise above the landscape like a true medieval beacon.

One of the church’s greatest treasures is its stunning mural paintings, originally adorning the central apse and discovered during restoration work in 1922. While the originals are now preserved at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, a spectacular projection mapping display brings their original glory back to life on site.
