The Monument and Its History
Rising above a Mediterranean forest with stunning views of the sea and the city of Palma, the majestic Bellver Castle stands as a unique architectural gem in the Balearic Islands. This remarkable fortress, commissioned in the early 14th century by King James II of Mallorca and designed by master builder Ponç Descoll, is distinguished by its innovative circular layout—an uncommon feature in European military architecture of the time.
Over the centuries, Bellver has witnessed dramatic historical events: from the military campaigns of Peter the Ceremonious in 1343 to the uprising of the Germanies in 1521. Later, it served as both a political and military prison, adding to the rich and complex history embedded in its walls.
The castle features an impressive central courtyard, surrounded by a double gallery of arches—rounded on the lower level and pointed (Gothic) on the upper floor. Its four towers, including the prominent and freestanding Tower of Homage, give the structure a striking and elegant silhouette. Inside, visitors can admire spaces such as the chapel dedicated to Saint Mark, and several exhibition rooms that now house the City History Museum, showcasing Roman artifacts, ceramics, and valuable pieces from Cardinal Despuig’s collection.
Now, you too can bring a piece of this history home. With our model kit of Bellver Castle, you can build a faithful reproduction of this iconic fortress and enjoy the satisfaction of recreating its unique architecture with your own hands.
