Castel del Monte: history and mystery in the heart of Puglia
Located on top of a 540-meter-high hill, Castel del Monte dominates the landscape of the Puglia region in southern Italy. Just 20 km from Andria, in the province of Bari, this majestic castle is visible from much of the area known as the Land of Bari.
It was commissioned by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia in the 13th century. The only document that confirms its construction is a decree dated January 28, 1240, in which the emperor ordered the supply of materials for the "castrum" near the now-vanished Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria de Monte.
What makes Castel del Monte unique is its striking octagonal architecture and the fusion of styles: Roman classicism, Cistercian Gothic, Romanesque influences, and even touches of Arab architecture. All of these elements come together in a work that has no equal in the world.
Although it has often been said that the castle was intended as a retreat, a place for falconry or astronomical observation, today it is believed that its main function may have been more symbolic and cultural: a temple of knowledge, a space for meetings between thinkers, scientists, and scholars of different religions and cultures. Each architectural element seems to have been designed to convey a message to future generations.
Over the centuries, Castel del Monte has lived many lives: a prison during the Angevin period, a site for royal celebrations, an abandoned fiefdom, a hideout for bandits, and a source of building materials. It wasn’t until the 20th century that it was rediscovered and restoration efforts began, turning it into the cultural icon it is today.
